It might be getting colder, but the gardening year is far from over! If you love to grow your own vegetables then this is the perfect time for you to plant onions and shallots from sets. It’s too late to sow onions from seeds, but it is not too late to sow onions if you use sets, these are immature “baby” onions that you can buy cheaply from wherever you buy your plants. In this video I give you all the tips and know-how that you need to get the best ever crops of onions and shallots.
Now is also the perfect time to plant garlic, because garlic needs a period of cold to trigger it to develop properly. The type of garlic you should plant depends on where you live in the world. If you get really cold freezing winters, Hardneck Garlic has a punchy flavour and can survive temperatures as low as –30°F or –35°C. If you live in a warmer climate where you don’t get winter temperatures below freezing, then Autumn is the ideal time to plant Softneck Garlic. This has a milder flavour, but stores for much longer and prefers milder winters. It still needs a period of colder weather to develop properly, but this variety really only wants that cold spell to be between 32°F and 50°F or 0°C and 10°C for one or two months.
